When considering how people recall memories, and images, of long ago, such as images of wartime, it sometimes helps to compare photographic images of yesterday to photographic images of today... The website Scenes From D-Day, Then and Now presents fantastic transitioning of photographic images from war years, to the same scene today. Just click directly on any of the 21 photographs, beginning with photograph number two, to make the photos appear as you would see the scene in 2014.
In David Lee Poremba's book On-The-Road-Histories Michigan he wrote about the massive number of those who served from Michigan in WWII:
"Michigan's greatest contribution to the war effort consists of over 600,000 men and women who served in the armed forces between September 1940 and December 1945. Over 14,000 of these were among the missing and dead in the conflict. They served in all branches of the armed forces, including the Coast Guard and the Nurse Corps, in all theaters of the War. Michigan's National Guard had been called into federal service in October 1940 and served with the Wisconsin men in the 32nd Division, known as the 'Red Arrow' for its swift movements through France and Germany during World War I."

Below: Ray Lewis, sign painter from Petoskey, was working in Willow Run, a bomber plant near Ypsilanti, Michigan, when he designed this particular "Kilroy was Here" meme. The meaning of "Kilroy was Here" showed pride throughout the American Armed Forces; the message being that no place, and no country, was beyond the reach of the American GI.
