Charlevoix County And Emmet County
HISTORY
Honoring the Military
I have long loved my two local Michigan counties of Charlevoix County where I grew up, and Emmet County where I was born, and where I have lived permanently since 1971. These two counties hold my history. My interests of local history, and genealogy, mesh together well... I am a known local historian and a known family historian, so others often share, with me, information and photos regarding the history of Charlevoix and Emmet Counties, knowing I will treasure what is shared.
This website exists because John and Maude Still chose to share with me the contents of a special box saved by John's mother Betty Herman Still. The red aged box labeled "Mrs. Steven's Gardenia" no longer holds candy, but still holds sweet valuable content. The box is filled with Betty's clippings of over 500 pictures, with descriptions, from Emmet County's Petoskey MI newspaper of the 1940's. The roughly cut-out clippings capture then current World War II service men and women of Charlevoix County and Emmet County, and, like candy, the photo clippings are meant to be shared and savored by those who appreciate family history and local history, with a military flavor.
If anyone else should wish to share with me any photos or clippings or stories of local Charlevoix County MI or Emmet County MI please e-mail: [email protected]
Thankfully today, we can deal with the duplicity of feelings about war, because we feel that we may remember those who have served, through commemoration, like on this website by recognizing the lives they lived; and their service to our country, and to a cause in which they believed so deeply. THANK YOU to those who have served in our military for our country.

This "Remember Me" video speaks to all of the emotions of a loved one being in the military.
Segment 33/35 "Father" is the son of a friend... Kyle Cieliczka son of Dave Cieliczka.
Dave Cieliczka attended North Central Michigan College in Petoskey MI in the 1960s.
UPDATE:
After Kyle Cieliczka separated from the regular Navy and submarines,
he served 4 or 5 years in the reserves.
In the reserves, he was assigned to a patrol boat unit in New Hampshire,
with a rating of " Chief gunners mate."
As a result and his boating experience his patrol group was sent to the Gulf,
while the United States was preparing for the second Gulf war.

The slideshow below was created from the cover pictures of the photograph album (Photo Right) of Arthur Stevens of Petoskey, where he kept his military photos from when he served in WWII as a pilot instructor. The relief styled pictures depict many instances surrounding freedom and liberty which depend so greatly on the service of those in the U.S. military. Arthur's daughter has also graciously shared Arthur's photographs from inside his album for all to enjoy viewing on this website.

Federation Park which no longer exists had once been the site of the home of Charles Caskey who was the contractor who built the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island in 93 days! Caskey's Petoskey, Michigan, home on this Bay and Division streets corner was eventually encompassed by the Imperial Hotel. After the Imperial Hotel burned in 1908, the space became Federation Park. Today the site is a parking lot for the Emmet County Building.
