Camp Grayling Camp Site Beginnings
Article Below: By 1913 much of the land in Northern Michigan had been logged off by the big logging companies. Rather than paying the taxes on the massive acreage of already logged off land, the logging companies, including Hanson's company, would often give the property back to the state. "A more than century-old military training center in northern Michigan, Camp Grayling, could more than double in size as the Michigan National Guard seeks to lease 162,000 acres of nearby state land from the state's Department of Natural Resources." The camp has grown since 1913 with other land acquisitions than the Hanson lumber operation, making Camp Grayling Joint Maneuver Training Center the LARGEST National Guard training facility in the United States. The site is regularly used by thousands of troops from the Michigan National Guard, National Guard units from other states, and visiting units from Canada and other allies.

A new agreement would require 1500-foot buffer zones around rivers and all water bodies. The National Guard discounts a lot of noise or disruption to the Lewiston area, and states that the National Guard will not be blowing things up on the new additional land; no new impact zones are to be added. Groups like environmental and conservation groups have met with the National Guard... like the Anglers of the AuSable group ask their input be greatly considered.
