On 7 March 1874 John Darrah came to Melrose Stop with $1.50 in his pocket, a barrel of flour and a cow to start a new life in a country that he had heard was covered with virgin timber. He had lost all he had in a fire in Kent County. He left his wife and a small child with Grandmother. His family joined him later. He homesteaded 160 acres and later sold lots to people who came to the area. He called it Clarion, named after his native home in Pennsylvania. Many of the newcomers spent time with the Darrah family while they were getting their shelters established.
