JOHN E. DARRAH
CO.B.
57 PA INF.

On 7 March 1874 John Darrah came to Melrose Stop with $1.50 in his pocket, a barrel of flour and a cow to start a new life in a country that he had heard was covered with virgin timber. He had lost all he had in a fire in Kent County. He left his wife and a small child with Grandmother. His family joined him later. He homesteaded 160 acres and later sold lots to people who came to the area. He called it Clarion, named after his native home in Pennsylvania. Many of the newcomers spent time with the Darrah family while they were getting their shelters established.

DEATH TAKES OLD PIONEER
John E. Darrah, Clarion, Called Tuesday
Moved to Homestead at that Place in 1876
Was Civil War Veteran and Mason
John Edward Darrah, pioneer Clarion man, member of the Masonic fraternity in Petoskey and a Civil War veteran, died late Tuesday after a long illness. He was seventy-one years old.
Mr. Darrah was born in New York [sic ~ Ross Twp, Kalamazoo Co, MI] on Jan 1, 1846, served through the Civil War with a Pennsylvania regiment, and later came to Michigan. Mr. and Mrs. Darrah were married at Rockford, Michigan Jan 1, 1870.
They moved to Clarion in 1876, when that region was a vast wilderness. They erected a small cabin on a homestead, their present farm home, and later erected a pretty residence and large barns, making their farm one of the finest in that region. At the time of their arrival there, their nearest neighbors resided on the north arm of Walloon Lake.
Mr. Darrah served for some time as a deputy state factory inspector in this district and held other offices.     He was financially interested in various manufacturing undertakings in Petoskey and other places.
    He was a member of the Ivanhoe Commandery, No. 36, K.T.; Petoskey Council, No. 52; R. & S. M., Emmet Chapter, N. 104; R. A. M., and Durand lodge, No. 344, F. & A. M.
Besides the widow, he is survived by one daughter, Mrs. John Colden of Clarion. Fred Darrah, of Petoskey, is a nephew and for some time made his home with his uncle at Clarion.
The funeral was held at 1:30 o'clock Thursday from the home and under the auspices of Ivanhoe Commandery, No. 36, K. T., of Petoskey. Burial at Clarion Cemetery, which is located on the Darrah homestead.
