Petoskey Chapter 68 Vietnam Veterans Welcome GI Home from the Persian Gulf... a Welcome Vietnam Vets Did Not Receive...
On 4 October 2022, Petoskey News Review reporter Tess Ware reported: The Vietnam War was fought in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. The University of Michigan records stated 2.2 million men were drafted between 1964 and 1973, although only 25 percent of servicemen in combat zones were drafted, with several volunteering in order to have more choice for branch they wished to serve. Martinchek chose to go into the Marines. He was trained in communications and radio telegraph. In the Spring of 1966 Martinchek was shipped to Da Nang Air Base in Vietnam where he located throughout his service. He did extend his service time twice, despite the horrors of war. His job was dangerous; often in the line of fire. After returning to home in Petoskey, he struggled to transition to home life, found a career as a builder, got married and had a daughter. He met with other veterans; meeting Lt. Gen. Jack Bergman US representative for Michigan. Bergman recommended Martinchek for the Combat Action Ribbon… bringing actual tears to Martincheck.
